An ambitious project to upgrade government-run medical colleges in Kerala was launched, the Rs1.2bn project under the Pradhan Mantri Swastya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) was cleared by the federal government in March last year. The Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is the first among 13 selected from across the country to be upgraded.
Under the scheme, the colleges will be upgraded to the standards of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan inaugurated the project implementation while federal Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramdoss laid the foundation stone for a super-specialty hospital, nursing and paramedical blocks.
The project aims at making availabile affordable and reliable tertiary level healthcare in the country in general and to augment facilities for quality medical education.
