Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan inaugurated the Kollam port which was renovated at a cost of Rs 44 crore

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the port located at Thangassery, near here, would be expanded as the Centre who has recognized it as a customs port, had already sanctioned Rs 12.85 crore for developing infrastructure there.

The port could handle nearly five lakh tonne goods traffic annually.With the Kovalam-Kollam-Kottappuram waterway set to become a reality in two years time, the port would gain more prominence, In future, container facilities could be introduced at the port and it would also have facilities for berthing luxury ships to boost tourism.
