Taking exception to Kerala's decision to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar despite the matter being sub-judice, PMK founder S Ramadoss on Tuesday urged the Tamil Nadu government to seek a Supreme Court stay on the move and file a contempt of court petition against the neighbouring state.
He also asked Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to bring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's attention the Kerala Government's "unilateral" decision which would "affect inter-state relations and federal structure" of the country. The government should immediately convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue and also the Andhra Pradesh Government's move to construct a check dam across river Palar, he said in a statement here.
Even while the inter-state problem of Mullaperiyar was pending before the apex court, the Kerala government had taken the decision to construct a new dam, which was an "open challenge" to the law of the land and to the unity and integrity of the country, he said. "If a new dam is constructed, Tamil Nadu will lose its rights on Mullaperiyar. Just like how we're depending on Karnataka for Cauvery water every year, we've to face a similar situation on Mullaperiyar too," he said.(source TOI)
