Kerala gears up for a new Sabarimala season

With 78,000 special rail coaches, 2,000 police personnel and 5,000 state government officials deployed for nearly four million devotees expected, the stage is set for the pilgrimage to the famed Sabarimala temple.

The 'new Sabarimala season' to the Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa begins Saturday and goes on till the third week of January. The temple, at an altitude of 914 meters above sea level and four km from Pamba in Pathanamthitta district in central Kerala, bars the entry of women who have attained puberty but not reached menopause.

The pilgrimage is preceded by an intense 41-day penance during which the devotee walks barefoot, wears a black dhoti and follows a strict vegetarian diet.
