International News: Musharraf says Pak elections by Feb 15

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf yesterday announced that elections will be held before February 15 and vowed to quit as army chief, hours after US President George W Bush bluntly told him to lift emergency rule.

As anger over military rule spread in Pakistan and its international aid coming under review, Musharraf however did not give any date when he will doff his uniform, a key demand made by the opposition and emphasised by Bush. The General was also quoted that he will quit as Army Chief after taking oath as the President for a second five-year term.

Former premier Benazir Bhutto called Musharraf's pledge as vague and insufficient and wanted him to shed uniform by Nov.15.
