BJP calls for Kerala hartal today

President Pratibha Patil’s security officers will be happy to find roads deserted and shops closed when she visits Kerala for the first time on Thursday. BJP has called a bandh on November 1 — the state formation day — in protest against the Indian Railways apathy towards Kerala. The immediate provocation being the inauguration of the Salem railway division that was carved out of Palakkad despite the state’s objection.

The Kerala high court, too, has taken a strong stand against the bandh call. Though the court refused to ban the hartal, it issued notices to the state government, the BJP, and Indian Union Muslim League on a petition seeking a direction to the government to ensure the safety of the people who go to work on Thursday.

The court will hear BJP’s contention on Thursday.
