Vegetable exports from Kerala to Middle East resume

South Indians in the Middle East can now again source their favourite vegetables in local markets, as vegetable exporters in Kerala decided to resume exports. The Agricultural Process Food Exporters Association (APFEA) had since Friday suspended exports following huge losses exporters were suffering on account of the rising rupee.

Currently, around 85 tonnes of fresh vegetables are exported every day from three Kerala airports.Forty percent of this goes to Dubai and the rest to other Middle Eastern countries. These exports bring in foreign exchange worth Rs.1.70 billion every year.

The decision to suspend the exports was taken because exporters had inked contracts with importers in the Middle East in 2003, when one US dollar fetched Rs.44. Currently one US dollar fetches around Rs.39.
